Don Miguel Ruiz is known as a nagual, or shaman, of the Toltec tradition. The Toltecs were an ancient group of scientists and artists that was formed to explore and preserve the practices and spiritual knowledge of the ancient ones.
Rooted in traditional Toltec wisdom beliefs, four agreements in life are essential steps on the path to personal freedom.
As beliefs are transformed through maintaining these agreements, shamanic teacher and healer don Miguel Ruiz asserts that lives will “become filled with grace, peace, and unconditional love.”
But what are the Four Agreements and how can we implement them into our daily lives?
The Four Agreements
1. Be True to your Word
Words have great power and when spoken can never be taken back. Therefore, when we use them, we should utter them with integrity. You should never gossip or say something with the purpose of causing harm or negativity to someone. Always speak from a place of love and compassion. Bt doing this you will always be true and impeccable with your word.
2. Don’t Take Things Personally
For the vast majority of the time, a person’s thoughts, opinions and utterances are nothing to do with you, they are a reflection of their own state of being and representative of the conditioning they have received in this lifetime. If someone acts in a way that causes you to hurt, always remember that their actions and words aren’t about you, they’re about themselves.
3. Don’t Assume
We all know the saying about assumption…. so we should never jump to assumptions or first impressions until we know the full details of a situation. Even then it is always best to keep an open mind. Things are rarely what they seem and knowing this is a powerful thing. Don’t assume others know what you want, the key to all of this is communication. Never be afraid to ask questions and communicate rather than taking a quick route of making an assumption.
4. Do your Best in Everything
The things you achieve in life will depend on a variety of factors, including age, experience, skill, prior knowledge and the lessons you have learned from past ventures. Your emotions will also play into this and those with a calm sense of being will often perform better than those who are stressed or anxious. The important thing to remember is that you should always strive to do your best, no matter what you do, if it’s for yourself or others. Always do your very best, because even if it doesn’t work out you will always know that there was nothing more that could have been done and that lessons the regret you will bring forward in life.
