As Albert Einstein famously said, our task in life is to free ourselves from the prison we have been thrust into. By doing so, you will learn how to connect with yourself spiritually. Many people have acknowledged this fact and many more are waking up to it. The things that we are expected to do in life no longer make sense to us and we start to feel like we’re part of a world where we don’t belong.
However, you do and it’s important to realize that these feelings come at the beginning of our awakenings. They don’t make you weird, or an outsider – they make you a person who is truly discovering what it means to live.
There are certain things that you can do that will aid you on your journey to learn how to connect with yourself spiritually.
“A human being is a part of the whole, called by us the ‘Universe’, a part limited in time and space. He experiences himself, his thoughts and feelings, as something separate from the rest – a kind of optical delusion of his consciousness. This delusion is a kind of prison for us, restricting us to our personal desires and to affection for a few persons nearest to us.
Our task must be to free ourselves from this prison by widening our circle of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature in its beauty. Nobody is able to achieve this completely, but the striving for such achievement is in itself a part of the liberation and a foundation for inner security.” – Albert Einstein
3 Practices that will Teach You How to Connect With Yourself Spiritually
Collect Experiences, not ‘Stuff’
Realizing that the accumulation of ‘stuff’ or material things will never truly make you happy is one of the biggest factors to freeing yourself.
All material goods do is serve as an anchor. The more we have, the more it seems that we are Physically stuck in one place, unable to leave all of these material goods behind that we have spent years working to obtain, or in most cases, have to spend years working to pay them off.
Travel, adventure, milestones. These are what we should be truly accumulating throughout life and you need to realize this.
Be at one with Nature
When a person is free, they have developed a deep connection with nature and experience extreme cabin fever when they’re cooped up indoors for too long. There is nothing quite like being outdoors, feeling the breeze brush across your skin and the sun heating your body. Did you even notice this before? You will do, and you will yearn to explore new places and reconnect with old ones.
There is something awe-inspiring about being in the presence of mountains that have stood for thousands of years, un-perturbed by the comings and goings of man. It matters not to them who lays claim to certain pieces of land and you laugh at how stupid it must seem to nature that people fight for ownership of something they will never truly own.
A spiritually free person recognizes these thoughts and the deepness of them. Recognizing that we all have our place on earth, none higher than another is a key aspect of becoming spiritually awakened. It makes you sad that one species takes away from the planet, where everything else gives back and works in harmony.
Be a Force for Good
Being aware of actions and consequences is a key element of spiritual freedom. Your choices do not only affect you, and you need to consciously think of others when you make them. Selfish desires need to be overcome and thought begins to lean towards how you can contribute to making the world a better place.
Ego holds you back, compassion propels you forward. Witnessing the suffering and poverty that fills the world will make you experience deep sadness. Your existence should leave the world a little bit better than when you found it.
Making the world a better place doesn’t necessarily mean being the one who can change everything. That’s impossible for one person unfortunately, it would take the coming together of the majority of people for that to happen.
However, knowing that even improving one person’s life is in fact, changing the world for one person is powerful knowledge and, through leading by example, we might instruct others to act in the same way. These simple tasks will teach you how to connect with yourself spiritually.
