38 People Share their Creepiest Reality Questioning Experiences

When I was in college, my friends group was rather big (10 or so of us) and we always went to lunch together at the cafeteria across campus every day. Outside of the atrium which we had to go through to get the cafeteria, there are bushes running alongside the pathway so we’re walking to lunch in groups of two. There were 4 or 5 in the first group and 4 of us (including me) in the trailing group.

The first group walks between the bushes and keeps going, but as soon as my group walks between the bushes we all kinda just stop. The most uneasy feeling just fucking washes into me and I’m a bit disoriented. The other guys felt it too then it kinda hits us all at once that someone is missing, but we can’t remember who or anything about them. We do a count and we’re all there, but we all are swearing there was one more person that’s now just gone.

We catch up to the first group and ask them and they have no idea what we’re talking about. It’s one of the weirdest things to ever happen to me. I believe in the supernatural but I take an incredibly skeptic view to it, but I can’t explain that. Also, in that same area, a lamp post just appeared overnight one time. No one in the group could remember it being there and we walked that way every single day. The group I was with when whoever it was disappeared took the long way around from then on out. I avoided that area like the plague.

I spent 3 weeks in a coma, but didn’t realize it. To me it seemed like many years had passed and I remember everything I did while in a coma. Woke up to realize that all those years weren’t real, been struggling with reality ever since

Not trying to fuck you up, but have you ever read the story about the guy and the lamp?:

“My last semester at a certain college I was assaulted by a football player for walking where he was trying to drive (note he was 325 lbs I was 120 lbs), while unconscious on the ground I lived a different life.

I met a wonderful young lady, she made my heart skip and my face red, I pursued her for months and dispatched a few jerk boyfriends before I finally won her over, after two years we got married and almost immediately she bore me a daughter.

I had a great job and my wife didn’t have to work outside of the house, when my daughter was two she [my wife] bore me a son. My son was the joy of my life, I would walk into his room every morning before I left for work and doted on him and my daughter.

One day while sitting on the couch I noticed that the perspective of the lamp was odd, like inverted. It was still in 3D but… just.. wrong. (It was a square lamp base, red with gold trim on 4 legs and a white square shade). I was transfixed, I couldn’t look away from it. I stayed up all night staring at it, the next morning I didn’t go to work, something was just not right about that lamp.

I stopped eating, I left the couch only to use the bathroom at first, soon I stopped that too as I wasn’t eating or drinking. I stared at the fucking lamp for 3 days before my wife got really worried, she had someone come and try to talk to me, by this time my cognizance was breaking up and my wife was freaking out. She took the kids to her mother’s house just before I had my epiphany…. the lamp is not real…. the house is not real, my wife, my kids… none of that is real… the last 10 years of my life are not fucking real!

The lamp started to grow wider and deeper, it was still inverted dimensions, it took up my entire perspective and all I could see was red, I heard voices, screams, all kinds of weird noises and I became aware of pain…. a fucking shit ton of pain… the first words I said were “I’m missing teeth” and opened my eyes. I was laying on my back on the sidewalk surrounded by people that I didn’t know, lots were freaking out, I was completely confused.

At some point a cop scooped me up, dragged/walked me across the sidewalk and grass and threw me face down in the back of a cop car, I was still confused.

I was taken to the hospital by the cop (seems he didn’t want to wait for the ambulance to arrive) and give CT scans and shit..

I went through about 3 years of horrid depression, I was grieving the loss of my wife and children and dealing with the knowledge that they never existed, I was scared that I was going insane as I would cry myself to sleep hoping I would see her in my dreams. I never have, but sometimes I see my son, usually just a glimpse out of my peripheral vision, he is perpetually 5 years old and I can never hear what he says.”

I sort of had a similar dream once, not injured, just sleeping but I know how the original OP may have felt.

In my dream I had a family and went to college and had a best friend that I knew for years. I was practically part of his family that is how long we knew each other. I knew his mum and basically it was just a normal life [in which I was much younger, I dreamed this when I was in my 30s but going to college, I was obviously younger in the dream]. My friend and I often studied together and this was just a very normal summers day. I remember telling him to bring his books and notes. we sat together and I swear, this was absolutely normal and real. We were sitting in my room on a red sofa, joking around and didn’t really start studying, when I suddenly felt light headed. I then felt as if I was ‘taken up’. My friend looked mortified and shouted “what the eff is happening?” He tried to grab me but couldn’t. I tried to answer but also couldn’t, and he became smaller and smaller as I went higher and higher, then I woke up.

Just like original OP, I was very confused when I woke up as I still remembered my friend and all the years we knew each other because that had been my life. Now all of those people [including ‘my parents’] were suddenly not there anymore. It was as if I really had been ripped out of one life and woken up in my ‘usual’ one.

My experience is nothing compared to the above one but I wanted to say in a very long way that I know the feeling of waking up from another life. It is quite different from normal dreams but are they?

I read a somewhat similar account in this book:

Another experience happened when I was a little older, perhaps 14 or 15. I used to have playful wrestling matches with two other boys.

One day we were talking about wrestling, and got on the subject of the world-famous wrestling hold called “the sleeper hold.” The hold would knock an opponent out by cutting off blood circulation to the brain. Anyway, we all wondered what it would be like to be knocked out. FD was the strongest of the three and the third boy was afraid, so I agreed to let FD knock me out with a bear-hug.

We went outside and he gave me the strongest bear-hug I’ve ever experienced. I couldn’t breathe and soon became unconscious. It was like waking from a dream; this world was a dream and I awoke to a reality more real and vivid than this world is. I saw the illusion of this existence on Earth dispelled! It faded away and I didn’t regret it. Soon I found myself in the “real” world in a huge city that I already knew.

My memory seemed to return–Yes–I had gone to sleep and dreamed of a little place called “Earth” and now I was awake. “That was a silly dream” I thought, and I soon forgot all about “Earth.” I continued my life, just like before I fell asleep. I lived in that fantastic city for years and years–centuries it seemed. I lived there so long that I COMPLETELY forgot all about Earth. For hundreds of years I had forgotten Earth. If someone was to ask me about it, I couldn’t remember, since it happened so long ago.

Then one day I was walking to a store. Suddenly a confusing loss of direction hit me and I felt myself falling. Suddenly I opened my eyes only to see strange leaves, the sky and FD and the other boy looking at me! Where was I now? How did I get here? What happened? Then I remembered: Hundreds of years ago, I fell asleep and found myself here. This place was called “Earth” and was a part of a weird dream. I must have fallen asleep again. Slowly my Earthly memory returned. I asked the boys how long I had been unconscious. They said only a few minutes. They asked me what happened, and I told them I didn’t want to talk about it.
