Washing our face is something we often take for granted. Mainly because we have being doing it since we were children and now, it’s become second nature to us.

However, what many of us don’t realise, is that we are in fact doing it wrong.

The most important thing for our skin is that it is clean, toned and moisturised. This is particularly important before we go to bed, as our skin rejuvenates naturally while we sleep.

Maintaining our skin keeps us healthy and keeps us looking youthful. Check out the following steps to make sure you’re doing it properly!

4 Steps To Cleaning Your Face – The Right Way

Step 1 – Get the wash right

A fundamental part of washing your face is the temperature of the water. It’s recommended that you use lukewarm water to loosen the dirt and residue that gets stuck in your pores. Using hot water can have a drying effect on your skin, so a good way to begin cleaning your face is to perform the wash and rinse routine using lukewarm water.  When using cleaners it is recommended that you massage your face in a circular motion. Because the t-zone produces more oil, it is best to spend additional time on these areas. The same goes for areas like your hairline. When finished, splash water on your face to rinse away the soap, especially around the edges of your face. Again, use lukewarm water here rather than cold. Cold water can be too much of a shock to your skin and damage it. Be sure to rinse all soap off your face, as a build of this residue can result in breakouts. To dry your face, gently dab it with a towel. Dabbing your face rather than wiping can prevent your skin from becoming irritated. It will also help prevent it been stretched and help avoid wrinkles on the skin.

Step 2 – Toning your skin

Once you are finished washing your face, it’s time to use some toner. This is particularly useful for those areas which produce more oil. All you need to do here, is put a tiny bit of toner on a cotton pad or ball and then swipe it around your face, focusing more on those oily t-zone areas. Toners remove leftover makeup, dirt and oil traces that may have been left behind after cleansing. Toning can further reduce your pores, refine your skin and eliminate any excess oil.

Step 3 – Applying Serum

After you’ve applied the toner, you can move onto the serum. Serum is a great way to target any skin issues you have. They are more liquid like and water based than creams, and are more easily absorbed by the skin. You can purchase serum that targets specific issues, such as anti-aging and redness.

Step 4 – Moisturising

Apply some moisturising cream each time you are done cleansing your face. This is extremely beneficial. It is important that the moisturiser you use is appropriate for your type of skin. For the night time, it is recommended to use a heavier moisturiser. During the day, you should use one with SPF to help protect your from the sun.
