What is Feng Shui? –  Introduction

What is Feng Shui? In basic terms, Feng Shui is an ancient art and science developed by the Chinese more than 3,000 years ago. It is a complex body of knowledge that will assure the person good health and fortune when practiced correctly

Feng Shui consists of two words. Feng = Wind and Shui = Water. Its teachings originate from Taoist vision and an understanding that nature and the land are alive. They are filled with energy, both good and bad. The aim is to aid the positive energy to flow unobstructed, leading to a healthier environment.

On top pf water and the wind, Feng Shui is also influenced by the theory of many other elements. These include wood, fire, earth and metal etc. This practice also guides Chinese astrological sciences including the times, dates of birth and years. It also rules colors, seasons, directions and the planets.

What is Feng Shui? – Tools

The main tools used in Feng Shui are the compass and the Ba-Gua. The compass is used to find the space direction of a building, using mathematical aspects that read terrestrial magnetism and identify these directions. The Ba-Gua is an octagonal shaped grid, that contains the symbols of the I Ching. The I Ching, which is also referred to  as the Classic of Changes or Book of Changes in English, is the oldest of Chinese ancient divination texts.

Those who practice Feng Shui say that only those who know the Bagua of their home , can find their optimum positions and understand specific areas of their life.

The feng shui compass is also called lo-pan. This compass is used to gain a deeper understanding about a site or a building. It is made of bands of concentric rings arranged around a magnetic needle. “Lo” translates to “everything” and “pan” translates to “bowl”. It is interpreted as the key to all mysteries of the universe.

What is Feng Shui? – Schools

Since it’s inception, many different schools of feng shui have been formed. Masters of Feng Shui can attain powerful results that lead to advantages in both a home and business setting. Through study, you can learn the many different elements that make up Feng Shui and discover how it affects many areas of life. People who study Feng Shui, take the art very seriously as it is a practice that can be as destructive as it is productive.

Some of the types of schools include:

  1. Form or Landscape School of Feng Shui
  2. Compass School of Feng Shui
  3. The Black Hat Sect Tantric Buddhist Feng Shui (BTB)
  4. Modern Feng Shui

What is Feng Shui? – Productivity Vs. Destruction

To give an example of productivity vs destruction;

In a productive cycle, fire produces earth, which produces metal, which produces water, which produces wood, which produces fire again. You can clearly see the cycle of end becoming beginning. Creation over destruction and a harmonious relationship.

In a destructive cycle however, wood destroys earth, which destroys water, which destroys fire, which destroys metal, and finally destroys wood. There is no cycle of creation here, just destruction with no example of harmony.

So what does this all mean?  Let’s say you were born on a fire year. For you, too much water in your home is not productive because water destroys fire. Conversely, if have a house containing a lot of wooden decor, then you will have achieved positive Chi because wood produces fire.

What is Feng Shui? – Is it for You?

Feng Shui is a science that has existed for thousands of years. Kings have built palaces based on the principles, people have arranged houses to achieve optimum levels of chi. It is an art practiced by the wealthy and poor alike. But it is an incredibly complex science. The majority of people these days hire Feng Shui experts when they are building or redesigning their home or work spaces. Hiring a master of Feng Shui takes the complexity out of it and allows them to identify all aspects to take into account in order to achieve harmony.

However, make sure the person you consult is in fact, a master or expert of Feng Shui. Too many people, with the aid of the internet, can call themselves an expert and by misreading information, can do more harm than good. This is why it is a good idea to achieve at least a basic understanding about the art itself. Not only will you benefit from learning the art of positioning, Feng Shui also allows you to learn a lot about yourself. It affects many areas of life and you have to have a great understanding of yourself to understand creating the perfect environment for you.

So what is Feng Shui? For those who take the art seriously, it is what creates the essence of life around us. It is essential in creating a harmonious balance between life and nature, particularly in the fast paced lives we lead today. It is a practice, when done right, that leads to a healthy and meaningful life.
