Thrift Shop Paintings Transformed into Pop Art
David Irvine is a Toronto based artist that transforms ‘forgotten about’ pieces of work into pop sensations. These unwanted paintings are found in thrift shops, yard sales and some have even been salvaged from the curb!
Irvine then paints in his own characters, unusual imagery or pop culture icons to give the unwanted pieces a new lease of life. David never paints over the existing signature and, depending on the project, will adapt the traits of the original colouring, lighting, brushstrokes etc., or will go in a complete opposite direction to achieve a high contrast in imagery. These discarded paintings are now given a second chance and are being enjoyed by collectors worldwide. There’s definitely a metaphor in there!
Irvine runs an art store called Gnarled Branch where he showcases his work, but due to the high demand he now sells all works via his Etsy profile. You can clearly see his obsession with popular culture by viewing these altered works. Characters he’s used include many from Star Wars, Godzilla, Doctor Who and even Pinky & The Brain! Go to his website or Facebook page for more information and to get glimpses of his new creations.
Below are 18 samples of Irvines work, I think you’ll agree that they’re pretty amazing! No wonder there’s such a huge demand for them.
