In a speech at the Economic Forum held yesterday, Leonardo DiCaprio pledged $15 million in donations, through his own charity, to environmental causes across the globe.
This money will be paid via grants and divided among many charities and causes, including;
The Solutions Project – Conducts Alternative Energy Research
Rainforest Action Network – Preserves Natural Habitats
Global Fishing Watch – Prevents overfishing across the globe
“The challenge before us requires each and every one of us to take action,” DiCaprio announced yesterday, “We owe this to ourselves, but more importantly to the future generations who are counting on us.”
This is not the first time DiCaprio has spoken of humanity’s need to change the way we treat the planet. At the 2014 UN climate Summit, Leonardo DiCaprio gave a moving speech about how climate change is already affecting the world, and how it’s only going to get worse.
You can see that speech here:
Since 1998, DiCaprio has pledged in excess of $30 million to over 65 organisations that tackle various environmental issues across the globe.
“In a year which has been the hottest in recorded history, it is hard to understand how some still refuse to accept the reality of climate change. Every year that we allow their refusal to hold the world back from making progress is another year gone. Precious days, weeks, months, and years wasted on inaction. But today is different. Across the globe people of all communities are demanding change. Marching and raising their voices to say enough is enough! We must act and we must all act now.” – DiCaprio at the the Mayors Summit, Paris. 2015
